I am the preacher. I have set my heart toward understanding. I have devoted my existence to discover the “good stuff” of life. I have questioned. I have studied. I have listened. I have attempted to teach. I have received counsel and tried to give counsel. I have not been slack or lazy in pursuit of truth. I have not accepted half truths or easy truths. I refused to abandon pleasure, because there is truth in pleasure. I refused to abandon pain, because there is truth in pain. I have been unrelenting......

Hey, I’m not looking for a debate here. What I really want is a connection.   A connection with people who, unlike Cypher in the Matrix, esteem truth over pretense, and people who can discuss these things without spite.   I really believe that if one analyzes their beliefs deeply, they will discover that they are not an atheist or agnostic for purely intellectual reasons, but for relational reasons.   At some point in life an event, or a series of events, stirred up a distrust and/or a distaste for God and/or......

Hey FBE-ers! In the opening scenes of the movie, Gladiator, general Maximus stands with his first officer and friend Quintus.  They gaze across a soon-to-be battle field as their enemies defy them and call them out to battle. Quintus, knowing the power and strategy of the Roman legions in his charge says of his enemies, “A people should know when they are conquered.” Maximus replies, “Would you, Quintus? Would I?” And indeed, the armies led by Maximus and Quintus soundly defeat those who did not yet know they were conquered. What about......

Hey FBE-ers! “God’s gonna get you!!!” All too often, I think that is the mindset we subconsciously have concerning God. Just this Sunday I was talking with two members of our church, and one of them began to joke about just how wise and smart he was. The other member smiled and “crescendo-ed” out an, “Ooooooooo,” while she took a step back away from him as if to say, “I’m pretty sure God is about to strike you with lightning for your pride, and I don’t want to be next to you......

Hey FBE-ers! I am continuing my meditation through Isaiah 54. You can catch last week’s here, and the one before that, here. Almost 5 years ago I stood atop Masada near the Dead Sea. It is an ancient fortress built upon a cliff. Soon after the Roman destruction of the Temple in 70AD, it was one of the last holdouts of Jewish rebels. It took thousands and thousands of Roman soldiers and Jewish slaves something like 3 months to conquer the fortress. Our tour guides taught us that while the soldiers and slaves toiled......

Hey FBE-ers! I am continuing my meditation through Isaiah 54. You can catch last week’s here.   54:4 Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced. 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. 54:4 for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. 53:3 and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.   Shame......

Hey FBE-ers, Barren. Dead. Dried up, empty, and worthless. What can a human do for God? When will God, the source of all that is good, look down on a person and be impressed? …even if a person was “good.” But we were sinners. Each of us living as if God were not God. Gorging ourselves on His tree – The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Each of us drooling over the promise of choosing for ourselves what is good and evil. Rejecting trust in God. Denying faithfulness to Him......

Hey FBE-ers! Did you know that the word “cosmetics” comes from the Greek word “kosmos”? (Merriam-Webster’s).   Do I sound like the dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding?   Kosmos and its derivatives carry the ideas of “order, arrangement, adornment” – “Thus it denotes ‘what is well assembled or constructed from its individual parts'” (Kittel). How much is too much?   When are we not even looking at you anymore?   1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Don’t let your kosmos be the outward things of braided hair, gold, and fancy clothes, but......

Hey FBE-ers! What a difference a day can make! Saturday was certainly a day of sorrow. Saddened, scared, and spent. The disciples huddle together with no hope.Their dear friend dead.Their Messiah massacred.Three years down the drain.Their only hope?Escape the Jews and the Romans to return to a life left behind. How were they to return to that life left behind? How were they to be Jews now?The Messiah failed. How could they worship God now?He could not prevail. How would they live in this life darkened by the shadow of what almost was? Saturday was certainly......

Hey FBE-ers! There are some difficult things about being a pastor. For instance: sometimes it is difficult to measure success.  I could count filled seats… but a big crowd might just mean we have entertaining music and a really handsome pastor… and not necessarily that lives are turning toward Christ. But there is one thing that helped me here at FBE.  Since we record our sermons, I can always return to a sermon that I knew God spoke through.  Sometimes I need to do this.  I don’t have an ego trip that......
