Hey FBE-ers! On Sunday we discussed God’s view of homosexuality.  I promised to elaborate a bit more on the brief biblical overview of homosexuality that was presented in the sermon.  So I will do so here. I cannot emphasize strongly enough, that this biblical overview should not be taken apart from the context of the sermon it was embedded in.  I encourage everyone who is reading this blog who hasn’t heard the sermon to do so.  You can listen to it here:  Identifying Grace: God and Homosexuality. Genesis: 1:26-27; 2:23-25 God created......

Hey FBE-ers!! How do you understand Genesis 6:1-4?      When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive.  And they took as their wives any they chose.  Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”  The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters......

See two previous posts on this topic here… and here.  Holy is “set-apart.”  But to be “set-apart” means “to be something different.”  What is different about God?  The most accurate answer is “everything.”  His power is different.  His thoughts are different.  Surely He is altogether holy!   But what is the driving motivator in God.  What guides His power?  Where do His thoughts turn, and why do they turn there?  Surely the human mind – the created mind – cannot know the mind of God – the creating mind.  But He has......

Hey FBE!  Let me reiterate what I said on Sunday.  God is doing amazing things here.  We’re having more baptisms and more babies.  We are growing and reaching the future of FBE!  We are more on mission than this church has been in a long time.  There is a growing sense of life and expectation among us. God is at work!  He is taking us somewhere! And the enemy does not like it.  There is always opposition to the mission.  In the past few weeks it has seemed to me that the......

Matthew 5:10-12Blessed are those who find themselves swimming in all of these blessings and are persecuted for it, for they are saturated in the reign of God.   Rejoice when you can find yourself in this kind of persecution, for you are among the company of the greatest in the Kingdom of the Persecuted King. “Those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake…”  Jesus stepped onto the human scene and said some crazy things. He said, “My peace I give to you.”  John 14He was called the “Prince of Peace.”  Isaiah 9He said,......

Hey FBE-ers! Do you believe that the most important thing in life is relationship?  – Love God; Love People? Me too. And yet I find that I place myself before God and people all the time.  “I deserve this time for myself,” I think.“How dare they cut in front of me!!?”“My comfort and luxury is more important than their need.”“God, I know this is a sin… but the temptation is just too strong.” This is why Jesus calls us to die to ourselves – to surrender all for Him.  But does this......

Interpretation of these beatitudes largely reflect the work of Mark D. Rotramel in his doctoral work, “Enhancing Transformational Leadership of Deacons Through A Spiritual Formation Model Using the Beatitudes in a Series of Lectio Divina Prayer Experiences.”  Please see the previous posts on Matthew 5:3-7. Matthew 5:8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “The pure in heart.”  Ecclesiastes 7:29 says, “God made man straight, but they have sought many schemes.” I picture this verse like this: A smooth, simple, and straight line – running pure in focus and in identity.......

Hey FBE-ers! The message I preached last Sunday – Feb 22, 2015 – is one of the most important sermons I’ve ever preached. Here is the introduction from the message, and after it, you will find a link to the message.   These past few weeks have been filled with difficult teachings from Christ.  “Let your guard down.” “Strive to be the last!”  “Be the seed; be the leaven…”  “Be the salt.”  Renounce all that you have or you are unable to follow Christ. Do you know why these teachings are difficult?......

Hey FBE-ers!!! A good and growing friend of mine asked me a challenging question last night:“If you could pick five books that your staff should read in order to “get you”, what would they be?” I couldn’t really answer the question last night.  It is difficult to narrow down a list to five books, because I have normally been shaped less by certain books in general and more by specific concepts retrieved from many different books.  But I thought it a fun challenge, and I offer the results here for any of......

Hey FBE-ers! I’ve been meditating on last week’s FBE-er – “Nephilim Notions” – and I have decided a sequel is in order. I’ve been giving a lesson every night this week to adults who decide to stay at VBS with their kids.  It has been an interesting look at our tendency toward “naturalism” – in other words, how our culture has shaped us to disbelieve in the “supernatural” – and how that can be a hindrance of our practice of the Gospel. Tonight I’m teaching on the plagues from Exodus 5-12.  This......
